Social Tennis

Just come along and join in ; play takes place at the following times. Balls are provided, and are replaced regularly.
Summer:
Monday evening 6:00 pm onwards
Wednesday evening 6:00 pm onwards
Saturday afternoon 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm
Sunday morning 10:00 am until 1:00 pm
Note that in the summer only, coaching takes priority on the astro courts on Monday evening.

Winter: As above but the evening sessions are limited to the two floodlit courts.

Singles League

A singles league is organised in the spring and summer in order to encourage use of the shale courts. All players of whatever standard may enter this league in order to improve their play. This gives all members an opportunity of contacting players of a similar standard, both male and female. This has proven to be very popular with those members who do not play regular social tennis and hopefully provides a breeding ground for future team players.

Club Championships

These are held annually and are spread over 2 weeks in the summer. The events consist of:

  • Ladies singles and doubles
  • Mens singles and doubles
  • Mixed doubles
  • Mens and Ladies handicapped singles

Trophies are awarded to the winners at the section AGM in November.

Occasionally, 'American' tournaments and Mixed Handicapped leagues are organised.

Fixed Fours / Casual Play

It is possible to arrange fixed fours or singles in the daytime or at any time when social play, coaching or league matches are not taking place. The shale courts (and one of the astro courts during league matches) may be used at the restricted times. There are further opportunities on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings during the winter.

Visitors

All members may bring guests to play, subject to certain restrictions:

  • Social tennis, league and club matches will have preferential use of the courts.
  • A charge of £2 per visit is payable to the club, or £1 for juniors. This should be paid to a committee member.
  • Visitors may play up to a maximum of 6 visits per year.

Matches

League tennis enables players to test themselves against a wider range of opposition and play on different surfaces whilst representing the club. Matches are generally played on weekday evenings in either Men's, Women's or Mixed doubles format. Teams of four are chosen from the squads at each level.

While league tennis can be quite competitive, the social side is always encouraged, and team players are expected to contribute to the cost of entertaining the opposition after matches. Likewise you will be entertained when playing away from home. Match suppers are generally taken in the clubhouse.

Match Practice

Practice sessions begin in February or March and last through to the start of the competition season. Members wishing to play league tennis should contact the appropriate team captain.

Mens practice : 6:00 pm Tuesdays

Ladies practice : 6:00 pm Thursdays

Juniors

Our section policy is to give the utmost support to young people wishing to play tennis. We provide coaching for all children over the age of 6 years, and are able to supply short tennis rackets and appropriately sized nets and balls. We try to make tennis fun and active with just the right blend of competitiveness.
Older children are coached according to age and ability, with opportunities to take part in competitions at the end of coaching sessions. Our aim is to provide children with the basic skills and to encourage a love of tennis which we hope will stay with them for life, hopefully becoming club members of the future.

Floodlights

Two of the astro courts have floodlights which are operated from the meters located in the Bowls Pavilion porch. During the winter the courts will be lit for social tennis on Monday and Wednesdays. A small fee is charged to each player.
Members playing at other times will need to obtain tokens from the bar in the clubhouse; the charge is currently £6 per 90 minute session.

Balls

{ }{ }{ }{ }Balls are provided free-of-charge for matches, social play, group coaching and tournaments. They are obtainable from committee members.
Members should provide their own balls for arranged games and casual play.

Dress and Etiquette

Although whites are no longer considered necessary for social play, members are expected to be suitably and safely attired, including proper footwear. For match play players should endeavour to wear some proper white tennis clothing.
Sports wear is generally acceptable, however members are not allowed to appear bare-chested or in jeans. Anyone deemed to be unsuitably dressed may be asked to leave the courts.

Players are expected to show consideration for others on the courts and to observe simple rules such as not entering or passing the back of a court whilst play is in progress. Loose balls should not be left in dangerous positions on court.

The shale courts should be swept after last use.
